- Entry Applicants must be registered general
nurses. Currently practising registered midwives and past registered
midwives who wish to gain a tertiary award in midwifery are also invited to
apply.
*External students must attend an on-campus
workshop each semester.
The course provides the opportunity for registered
general nurses to become eligible for registration as midwives with the Nurses
Board of South Australia.
This course prepares students to be safe and
effective midwifery practitioners in women’s health and midwifery. It equips
them with the knowledge and skills to work with women and their families during
the reproductive years including pre-conception, conception, pregnancy, labour
and delivery, following childbirth and infancy.
Employment opportunities
Graduates can expect to be employed in a range of
settings, from large public hospitals to smaller private institutions,
practising within the hospital building as well as on home visits.
Aim of the course
The course prepares graduates for effective,
evidence-based practice in midwifery. Graduates will enter the midwifery
profession as competent, innovative, analytical, sensitive and woman-centred
practitioners and will:
perform within legal and ethical parameters
of midwifery practice;
advocate for the rights and needs of women
within their contextual environments;
contribute to personal and professional
development of the discipline of midwifery through reflective practice;
function as an effective change agent
towards innovative midwifery practice;
recognise the value of and support research
in midwifery practice;
participate in collaborative processes for
optimal outcomes in midwifery practice;
advocate for the protection of the physical
environment for families.
Course content
The course comprises subjects totalling 36
points of study. There are separate courses of study for those new to midwifery,
and for practising or previously registered midwives.
New students undertake four 9-point
subjects:
| Midwifery One |
Provides the foundation for students' theory
and practice development in midwifery, with grounding in health and well-being. |
| Midwifery Two |
Enables students to respond appropriately to
deviations from normally expected conditions within midwifery practice. |
| Midwifery Three |
Broadens and enhances students' knowledge and
experience, and provides encounters with the diversity and challenges of
contemporary midwifery practice. |
| Midwifery Four |
Expands students' roles toward professional and
innovative practice, and pursue continued knowledge development in midwifery and
midwifery practice. |
Practising midwives and those re-entering
midwifery practice undertake the following subjects, which provide the essential
theory and practice to gain a tertiary degree:

Expands students' theory and practice development
in midwifery, through an exploration of midwifery grounded in health, wellness
and normality. |
| Midwifery Six |
Enables students to respond appropriately to
deviations from normally expected conditions within midwifery practice. |
| Practicum I |
Through field placement students apply the
practice of midwifery as grounded in health, wellness and normality. |
| Practicum II |
Through field placement students apply their
knowledge of deviations from normally expected conditions within midwifery
practice. |

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Entry to this course is via previous nursing qualification unless the applicant
is applying to upgrade their midwifery qualification or to re-enter midwifery
practice. No previous employment experience is required for nursing applicants
seeking to become midwives.
