Length of course 1 year full-time, 2 years

Entry Successful completion of an
undergraduate degree in nursing or equivalent, with a credit or better
average.
This course is also offered externally.
Aim of the course
The Honours program aims to advance the
professional practice of nursing by giving students the opportunity to
undertake specialist coursework and research in their area of interest or
field of practice. Importantly, the program provides students with the
opportunity to understand and apply the research process, with a view to
pursuing a Doctoral program. In addition, graduates from the Honours program
will have an advantage in any health or nursing organisation where knowledge
of the research process is valued.
Course content
The Honours program comprises 36 points of study,
taken in full-time mode over 1 year or equivalent. The program contains a mix
of advanced theory, research education and a research project leading to the
presentation of a thesis. All students undertaking the Honours program are
provided with a member of academic staff as a supervisor. Supervisors actively
engage in current research and scholarship, and integrate their knowledge and
understanding into their supervision practices, with a view to strengthening
the education and support of students.
In addition to the traditional Honours
program, students may have the option of combining their Honours study with a
Graduate Nursing Program (GNP). This usually involves the commencement of the
clinical placement component of the GNP in January of Semester 1 on a
full-time basis (1.0) over a seven-day roster cycle. In Week 1 of Semester 2
students move to a part-time (0.6) basis roster over a seven-day roster cycle,
and begin their preparation for the Honours project. The combined program
enables students to both complete the Honours program and their GNP within 18
months.
