Welcome to the School of Nursing &
Midwifery. One of seven schools within the Division of Health Sciences, the School delivers programs on both the
City
East and Underdale
campuses of the University (Nursing programs are also delivered at the
University's Whyalla
campus).
Occupying modern purpose built teaching
facilities, incorporating fully equipped clinical nursing and bioscience
laboratories, specialised computing pools and research areas, the School offers
undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs in the areas of nursing,
midwifery and health. The School has an enrolment of over 1500
local, national and international students, with programs delivered both on
campus and by flexible delivery (external).
At
undergraduate level, the Bachelor of Nursing award provides initial nurse
training, leading to registration with the Nurses Board of South Australia as a
Registered Nurse. Excellent employment opportunities exist for graduates in
South Australia as well as nationally and internationally. Registered Nurses can
further their nursing careers by undertaking post-registration study in other
specialist areas of nursing, such as midwifery, psychiatric mental health,
occupational health and safety and other clinical specialty areas including
intensive care, acute care, aviation nursing and paediatrics.
An Honours program is available for students who
gain a credit level average or higher within their undergraduate award, which
may be taken in either traditional form or as an integrated Honours/Graduate
Nurse Program. Honours study in turn may lead to entry into research study at
either Doctoral or Masters level.
Research within the School is focussed via the
Centre for Research into Nursing and Health Care, which is headed by Professor
Julianne Cheek. The Centre provides opportunities for staff and students
to further research activities and research study. The Best Practice in Health
Research Group, through high quality research, identify
and explore best practices in health with particular emphasis on health
education and mental health.
With
formal links to professional nursing bodies and health partners both locally and
overseas, and with a commitment to advancing research and teaching in nursing
and health, the School of Nursing & Midwifery is proud of its achievements
in providing high quality education, research and consultancy, to meet the needs
of the nursing profession and the health industry.

City East has as its major academic and community service a focus in
the health, biomedical and nursing professions, reflecting the strong
teaching and research links between programs in these disciplines and the

The Whyalla campus of the University represents the major centre of
tertiary education in rural South Australia. It is situated on a 22
hectare site 400 kilometres from Adelaide in the seaport and industrial
centre of Whyalla. The campus serves a region in the north and west of the
State which includes Aboriginal lands, pastoral properties and extensive
mining activities, including the Olympic Downs uranium, copper and gold
production complex.
Buildings at Whyalla, which include a library and Students Association
facilities, are contemporary and situated in pleasant grounds with easy
access to the centre of the city. Student accommodation is available at
the new Whyalla Student Village which comprises 11 on-campus units, each
housing eight students, and covered by Campus Security.
