WENTWORTH
At the junction of the Murray and Darling rivers (the largest water catchment system in eastern Australia) you will find the township of Wentworth. A little further along the Murray you will find Dareton. Both towns are very close to Mildura (30 and 20 kilometres respectively) in the Sunraysia of northwest Victoria.

The first Doctor arrived in Wentworth in the 1850's. The hospital was and still is located in an isolated position on the eastern bank of the Darling River. The location was chosen to cater for epidemics and to enable riverboat crews to access the hospital for treatment if needed. Communication with the township was by means of two boats. A temporary hospital was established in 1885
So important was the town of Wentworth at the turn of the century that it was considered for the siting of the national capital - it missed out by 10 votes! The Wentworth Hospital has survived the 1920's flu epidemic, a diphtheria epidemic and 3 major floods.
The main industries are dried vine fruit, wine grapes and citrus. There are also outback sheep / wheat properties.
