MENINDEE
In 1852 Thomas Pain travelled up the Darling River from the Murray River looking for a good place to settle. He selected a good shady spot on a high sand ridge over looking the Darling River. In 1853 Pain built his hotel, now known as Maidens Hotel, starting the township of Menindee. By the time the Burke and Wills expedition left Melbourne the Menindee township was already established.
Menindee is only minutes away from Kinchega National Park and the Menindee Lakes Scheme where campers, caravans and holiday homes form their own small communities on the lakes. Kinchega is an oasis for wildlife, birds, kangaroos and emus in their natural habitat surrounded by river red gum trees and the tranquillity of the bush.
Menindee plays a major role in the storage of water associated with the Murray Darling Catchment Area through the series of lakes and regulator weirs controlled by the Department of Land and Water Conservation.
Agriculture is the main industry and is expanding with cotton, cereal crops, grapes, apricots, other stone and citrus fruits.
