The Far West Area Health Service (FWAHS) covers 270,000 square kilometre - 34% of NSW. Geographically it is the largest Area Health Service and the most sparsely populated with pockets of communities dotted across the landscape with populations ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand. There are 53,396 people living in the far west. Communities range from 1 to 10 hours drive from the city of Broken Hill. These include Menindee, Ivanhoe, Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Tibooburra, Wanaaring, Goodooga, Wentworth, Balranald, Bourke, Brewarrina, Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri and various other villages and hamlets.

The geography of the FWAHS is such that the provision of health services to the communities is challenging. Health services are slightly different from community to community and are provided by Remote Area Nurses, Resident General Practitioners, Community Health Services, Aboriginal Medical Services and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The FWAHS is committed to strengthening primary health care across the area and improving the health of the people of far western NSW by providing services that meet the peoples needs.

Partnerships play an integral role in the delivery of health services across the Far West. Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation's management of the Lower Western Sector includes coordination of Aboriginal health services to the lower sector and Broken Hill. The tie between the organisations is demonstration that cultural and technical skills, when combined, can provide an effective and appropriate health service to Aboriginal people.

The University Department of Rural Health offers support for health care professionals in the fields of primary health care, clinical medicine and public health and research support. The Department is a link to the learning needs of a remote workforce providing multidisciplinary development and education in partnership with the Area.

The landscape is semi arid. Major industries include mining, agriculture, cattle and sheep stations and cotton and fruit growing along the rivers and lakes. Attractions within the area include the Menindee Lakes, Kinchega and Mutawintji National Parks, underground mining tours (Lightning Ridge has the worlds only known source of black opal), the Living Desert and Sculpture Symposium. The area is also famous for it's local artists who are renowned both in Australia and world wide including Pro Hart, Jack Absalom, Roxanne Minchin and Peter Anderson. A visit to the many art galleries and studios will enable visitors to see the regions spectacular scenery on canvas, capturing the beautiful colours of the outback. Regular events include: St Patrick's Race Day, Outback and All That Jazz Festival, Inland Speedboat Championships.

The Far West Area Health Service is committed to learning, training and development of staff.
