Graduate Nurse Program
2003
The Sydney Private Hospital, which is a fully accredited hospital, is currently conducting a support Program for Recent Graduate Nurses. This is to help you gain professional recognition, development and the opportunity to gain full-time employment at this Hospital.
Number of Positions:
Up to 8 positions will be offered in 2002.
Length of Program:
The commencement dates for the first intake of recent graduate nurses is January 2002. Further intakes will take place in July 2002. The six (6) month program includes four (4) rotations within the specialities listed below.

Goal of Program:
The vision of The Sydney Private Hospital is to educate and allow nurses to develop professionally to provide high standards of patient care to meet the health care needs of our community today and into the 21st century. The goal of the program is to provide recently graduated registered nurses with a supportive environment to assist in their transition to the registered nurse role. This initiative enables The Sydney Private Hospital to contribute and invest in the nursing profession and patient care.
Graduate Support:
A Nurse Educator is responsible for the planning, development and professional structure of the program. Preceptors will be available in each unit to support the day to day implementation of the program and are responsible for maintaining continual evaluation and assessment of clinical competence of the graduates.
Preceptors and clinical nurse specialists support the graduates during the six (6) month program. The Educator, Nursing Unit Managers and preceptors are involved in the performance appraisal of the graduates at 3 months, 6 months and then annually if accepted as a permanent member of staff.
The program has been set up to enable this hospital to recruit, educate and develop and retain competent registered nurses. This initiative has all the ingredients for success and will benefit patient care, and the nursing profession as a whole.
Career Opportunities:
Following successful completion of the program, graduates are invited to apply for vacant registered nurse positions. Further education opportunities exist for the graduate to develop within a speciality of their choice including sponsorship in Graduate Certificate courses conducted by the NSW College of Nursing.

Support Services:
Information systems include a hospital Intranet providing pathology results and Internet access for current nursing research purposes.
Doctors provide on-site medical cover from 0700-2300hrs. On-site support also includes: Physiotherapy, Pathology, Radiology, with visiting pharmacy and pastoral care.
Nursing Education:
The Sydney Private Hospital has an experienced full-time educator. Education includes inservices on a variety of subjects such as Fire Safety, OH&S, Infection Control, Customer Service and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. All nurses (including CNS, part-time, casual and night staff) attend clinical workshops. The Sydney Private Hospital supports staff in furthering their tertiary education and provides undergraduate placements and clinical experience for “Refresher” students.
