Immigration & requirements to work

When applying for a job in a different country there are many processes and procedures to follow.  We have put together a collection of material and links that may aid you.

Country       Organisation

Australia
New Zealand
United States

If you know of any other links for other countries and any updated information we would be pleased to hear from you.  Just fill out our feedback from with the relevant information.

Australia: Department of Immigration: http://www.immi.gov.au is the place to start for general information concerning immigration requirements to Australia.  The Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DEETYA) have constructed some notes on registration for overseas nurses it can be found at: http://www.deet.gov.au/noosr/leaflets/nursing.htm

Nurses wishing to apply for registration/enrolment under the Nursing Act, 1995 who undertook their educational preparation overseas, and who have not previously been registered/enrolled in an Australian State or Territory, must have their suitability for registration/enrolment assessed by the ANCI prior to making application with any Australian Nursing Board.

Exceptions to the above occur for Overseas Educated Nurses who undertook their educational preparation in the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa (and who gained initial registration/enrolment with the South African Nursing Council), New Zealand, United States of America, Canada and Singapore. Graduates of these countries may apply directly to the Nursing Board  for registration/enrolment. Graduates from Singapore, who completed their education prior to 1992, and graduates from the Provence of Quebec in Canada must demonstrate English proficiency.  (more...)

New Zealand: Department of Immigration New Zealand: http://www.immigration.govt.nz

USA: The US requires nurses to undergo a certification process.  Details can be found at: http://www.cgfns.org - The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.

Registration Boards: We have a detailed list of registration boards from around the world on site.   You can use this list to check out their web site or write to them requesting the relevant information for working in that country.

Sponsorship: Many of the recruiters on NursingJobs, both agencies and hospitals, have sponsorship agreements with immigration departments.  This makes the process of obtaining a job in your chosen country a little easier as one of the major requirements for immigration is a bon a fide sponsor.  That is, someone who can vouch for you.  Of course you still have to satisfy immigration and work permit requirements but it helps to know that you will get employment once you land.  Agencies usually can interview candidates before they travel and have you listed on their books so that you don't need to waste time going through another interview process when all you want to do is start working. You can check out the above websites for more information about sponsorship or look at the profiles on NursingJobs to see which organisations can sponsor you.  Job ads from time to time will also indicate if the organisation accepts foreign candidates.
