When
applying for a job in a different country there are many processes and
procedures to follow, some of which can be quite complex. Australia is no different. We have compiled a
checklist which, although not definitive, should provide enough information to start
you on your way.
Checklist
Find
out if you would like to work in Australia first. Nursing Jobs has a great
many employer profiles that will enable you to gather a "feel" for the
culture and prevailing employment conditions. Many organisations can offer
non-pecuniary benefits. They can also offer sponsorship for those seeking
to work in Australia. Sponsorship is required once the formalities of
visa's and registration have been completed. The Australian Government
requires that you have a Commitment for work prior to entering Australia.
Contact the Australian High Commission or Embassy in your country for visa information and
information concerning temporary working visas and/or permanent emigration
requirements.
Contact
the Australian Nursing Council Inc as they
need to assess the suitability of your qualifications for immigration purposes before you can be
registered or enrolled.
Each state in Australia operates their own Nurses Registration Board
or Council. Each of which are charged under an Australia Act of
Parliament to register nurses, monitor breaches of conduct and review
educational standards. We have provided a set of links below
that you will be able to use to gather all the required
information. Also if English is not your first language, then
you will need to undergo a professional English language competency test.
Visa and Nurse Registration Links
We have a detailed list of registration boards from around
the world on site. You can use this list to check out their web
site or write to them requesting the relevant information for working in
Australia or in another
country.

Australian
Department of Immigration
http://www.immi.gov.au
is the place to start for general information concerning immigration
requirements to Australia. The Department of Employment, Education,
Training and Youth Affairs (DEETYA) have constructed some notes on
registration for overseas nurses it can be found at: http://www.deet.gov.au/noosr/leaflets/nursing.htm
More
on Visas
There are 3 types of visa appropriate for overseas visitors wishing to work full time in Australia:
Working Holiday Visa
Entitles the bearer to stay and work in Australia for 12 months, with no more than 3 months with any one employer (except accredited employment
agencies, who can employ the holder for the whole 12 months, but with conditions). Only issued to applicants from countries that have a reciprocal
agreement with Australia. Age restrictions also apply to this visa.
Many hospitals and agencies are able to offer casual employment to travelling nurses on this type of visa for the full duration of their stay
which can provide for short "ad hoc" shifts or contracts of up to 3
months at each sponsoring hospital.
Permanent Resident Visa
Entitles the holder to reside indefinitely in Australia with no work restrictions. Allows for multiple travel to and from the country (conditions apply). The application process can be complex, lengthy and costly and the applicant must satisfy a "points system" screening method to succeed.
Sponsored Business Visa
Enables the bearer to live and work in Australia for up to 4 years with certain employment restrictions (must remain employed by the business holding the sponsorship). The application process is relatively inexpensive and can be speedy (less than 3 months if lucky).
Suitability for
Registration Assessment: ANCI
The ANCI assesses nursing
qualifications for immigration purposes ONLY. Nurses wishing to apply for registration/enrolment under the
various state and territory Nursing Acts and who undertook their educational preparation overseas, and who have not previously been registered/enrolled in an Australian State or Territory, must have their suitability for registration/enrolment assessed by the ANCI prior to making application
for some types of immigration visas and work permits. You will still be
required to apply for registration/enrolment in each Australian state or
territory that you wish to work in. Some Australian states/territories will
accept the ANCI assessment and not require further documentation. The
registration authorities will inform you of their requirements when you contact
them.
Exceptions to the above may occur
in some Australian states and territories for Overseas Educated Nurses who undertook their educational preparation in the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa (and who gained initial registration/enrolment with the South African Nursing Council), New Zealand, United States of America, Canada and Singapore. Graduates of these countries may apply directly to the
nursing registration authorities
for registration/enrolment but you will need to contact these authorities
directly. Graduates from Singapore, who completed their education prior to 1992, and graduates from the
Province of Quebec in Canada must demonstrate English proficiency. (more...)
Sponsorship
Many of the recruiters on NursingJobs, both agencies and hospitals,
have sponsorship agreements with the immigration department. This makes the
process of obtaining a job a little easier as one of
the major requirements for immigration is a bon a fide sponsor.
That is,
someone who can vouch for you. Of course you still have to satisfy
immigration and work permit requirements but it helps to know that you will
get employment once you land.
Agencies usually can interview candidates
before they travel and have you listed on their books so that you don't need
to waste time going through another interview process when all you want to do
is start working. You can check out the above websites for more information
about sponsorship or look at the profiles on NursingJobs to see which
organisations can sponsor you. Job ads from time to time will also
indicate if the organisation accepts foreign candidates.
